Mizuno x Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum and Mizuno team up again for the TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2025. Inspired by a centuries-old Japanese kimono, the collection includes both a running shoe and a lifestyle sneaker—uniting waves, tradition, and craftsmanship.

Limited-edition shoes inspired by a Japanese kimono from the Rijksmuseum

This year, the Rijksmuseum and Mizuno join forces once again, this time with two limited edition shoes. The Mizuno Wave Rider 29 Rijksmuseum running shoe and the Mizuno Contender sneaker. The Wave Rider 29 is specially designed for the TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2025, this limited-edition running shoe combines cutting-edge Japanese technology with a remarkable artwork from the Rijksmuseum’s collection. The symbolism from the artwork is reflected in the stylish sneaker.

An ancient kimono as the source of inspiration

The design is based on a rare 18th-century Japanese kimono, richly decorated with a powerful wave motif. Water – an element that plays an undeniable role in both Japan and the Netherlands – takes centre stage. The gradient in the upper part of the running shoe, from light to dark blue, represents the transition from shallow to deep water. The insole showcases the refined kimono pattern in all its glory, while subtle details reference the ornate manhole covers of Osaka. In the sneakers design, you’ll find the water pattern from the kimono. On the tongue of the shoe, you’ll see the clearly recognisable orange mane of the shishi, the Chinese guardian lions.

Art at your feet

The combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design makes these shoes a unique collector’s item. Whether you’re breaking your personal record or moving stylishly through the city, with the Wave Rider 29 and the Contender, you’ll carry a piece of the Rijksmuseum with every step.
