RICHARD LONG AT THE RIJKSMUSEUM
The work of artist Richard Long comprises, among other things, subtle interventions
in landscapes – often in the most remote locations in the world – that he explores by
walking. ‘My work has become a simple metaphor of life. A figure walking down his road,
making his mark … I am content with the vocabulary of universal and common means.
Walking, placing stones, sticks, water, circles, lines, days, nights, roads,’ as Long once put
it. Many of Richard Long’s works are imbued with an intentional temporariness. The four
grassworks he made in the Rijksmuseum gardens in the summer of 2023 are in fact
ephemeral to a very high degree. Together with the four stone sculptures in the gardens
and in the museum, they form a variegated palette of Long’s art, an ode to space, time
and the human dimension.
