In September 1727 ambassador Cornelis Calkoen paid his respects to the sultan in Istanbul. In his entourage was an 'embedded' artist: Jean Baptiste Vanmour. Calkoen would commission dozens of works from Vanmour, a collection that has survived virtually intact, offering the Rijksmuseum visitors an vivid image of life in the capital of the Ottoman empire. The Rijksmuseum Series is an easy way to learn about the most important artworks and historical topics in the Rijksmuseum. Each lavishly illustrated volume introduces a work of art and places it in its (art) historical context. Ideal for anyone who wants to find out more on his favourite artwork in the museum, as a souvenir or gift.
