According to the Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi, anything could be sculpture:
‘any material, any idea without hindrance born into space’. He designed tables, cars,
and playground equipment, working with materials ranging from stone to light. With his
unconventional and pioneering approach, he became one of the most important
sculptors of the twentieth century.

In the twelfth summer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum gardens, Noguchi’s biomorphic
forms and rough stone sculptures blend seamlessly into the historic gardens. His Akari
lamps and innovative ceramics are displayed in appropriate locations within the museum
building. This book presents the full scope of his oeuvre – from traditional works in robust
basalt to design classics such as his iconic coffee table and world-renowned lamps.
