Desgin

Desginer Sander Luske was inspired by the elaborate lace of Marten and Oopjen painted by Rembrandt van Rijn. The patern of this beautiful lace is printed on the porcelain mug. This mug is particulary special because it is made by hand by people at a great distance from the labour market in a social project called Desing X Ambacht. 

Desgin X Ambacht

Design X Ambacht is a label with a particular background. They develop and manufacture interior design and home accessories in their day care centers of healthcare organization Siza. Leading Dutch designers look at the specific talents of the employees. Sander Luske, Ruud Jan Kokke en Floris Hovers have translated the talents of the individual employees into their designs. This process helps to ensure that everyone has his/her unique contribution to making the product. Through these experiences the makers participate in everyday life, they can be proud and increase their self-confidence, knowledge and personal development.

Marten Soolmans & Oopjen Coppit van Rembrandt

Rembrandt painted the portraits of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit in Amsterdam in 1634 when he was twenty-eight. The meticulous rendering of the opulent costumes, the vitality of the figures and the subtle use of light in these paintings place them among his greatest masterpieces. The portraits are also a milestone in Dutch history, marking the rise of the ambitious young Dutch Republic in the Golden Age. The fact that these two citizens of Amsterdam posed for their portraits in regal style, wearing the most magnificent outfits in the latest French fashion, says much about their pride and affluence and about the emergence and pretensions of the young republic. Until then life-sized portraits of people standing were the prerogative of monarchs and the nobility. They were Rembrandt’s first life-sized, full-length painted pendant portraits – and the only ones he would ever make.
