This portrait of Johannes Ellis and Maria Louisa de Hart (1846) is the earliest known photograph from Suriname, made some six years after the invention of photography. Research has shed new light on the early photographers and their clients, on the couple Ellis-De Hart and on the governing and mercantile elite in Suriname.
