This portrait of Johannes Ellis and Maria Louisa de Hart (1846) is the earliest known photograph from Suriname, made some six years after the invention of photography. Research has shed new light on the early photographers and their clients, on the couple Ellis-De Hart and on the governing and mercantile elite in Suriname.

The Rijksmuseum Series is an easy way to learn about the most important artworks and historical topics in the Rijksmuseum. Each lavishly illustrated volume introduces a work of art and places it in its (art) historical context. Ideal for anyone who wants to find out more on his favourite artwork in the museum, as a souvenir or gift. DUTCH language edition (also available in English)
