Japanese lacquer artists conjure up a universe in silver, gold and black. Jan Dees takes you into this dreamed world, with a selection of masterpieces from the period 1890-1950.
In De gedroomde wereld (Dutch edition only), Dees describes the principles of Japanese lacquer art on the basis of a selection of masterpieces from the period 1890-1950. With each object, information is provided about the makers, the design and the techniques used, as well as the art-historical developments. Dees makes it clear that there is a second fascinating layer of beauty hidden beneath the first, which will further increase the reader's amazement at Japanese lacquer art.
Over a period of 35 years, Jan Dees published dozens of articles and a number of books about Japanese lacquer. His dissertation Facing Modern Times (2007) deals with the revival of Japanese lacquer art in the period 1890-1950.
