Bringing together more than 150 highlights from the collection of the Rijksmuseum, this book presents a spectacular view of the glory of the Dutch Golden Age. Dutch art and culture enjoyed a period of unparalleled flowering in the seventeenth century. Rembrandt experimented with innovative techniques, Vermeer captured life in hushed, tranquil scenes, and the familiarity of the everyday became a subject in its own right in still lifes with cheeses and flowers, and landscapes with dunes and windmills. A large middle class of well-to-do burghers paraded their recently acquired status and wealth by furnishing their homes with costly paintings and sculptures, silver and glass objects, and ornately decorated furniture.

This publication presents a selection of paintings by the great Dutch masters as well as virtuosically fashioned household items and adornments from the period 1600-1700. In these pages you will of course meet Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch, Jewish Bride and the marriage portraits of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit, Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Frans Hals’s Merry Drinker, Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede by Jacob van Ruisdael, sculptures like the Bacchant by Adriaen de Vries, large doll’s houses, the impressive delftware, and other superb objects from the impressive collection of the Rijksmuseum.
