In Rembrandt Conservation Histories, conservators, art historians and other specialists from museums, cultural institutions and universities around the world, address aspects relating to the conservation history of paintings by Rembrandt and raise awareness of how the appearance and condition of paintings by Rembrandt can (partly) be explained by their treatment histories.

The collection of essays presented cover aspects relating to the interdisciplinary conservation history of Rembrandt paintings: from a chronological overview of conservation history in major institutes around the world and the leading figures who played a role in these histories, to how ideas about cleaning, varnish, perception, taste, authenticity and finish have informed historical conservation treatments.

As Rembrandt’s masterpieces have had the dubious honour of having underdone numerous treatments in the past, the attention to conservation history is particularly fruitful for Rembrandt scholarship. The collection of essays presented here is unique, because it is the first publication to focus, not on the conservation history of a certain period, or of a certain technique or material, but on the conservation history of the paintings of one artist. These stories of the past are not only important in the study of Rembrandt, his paintings and the collections that hold them, but are simply wonderful and engrossing to read.
