William Prince of Orange, also known as William the Silent, was killed in Delft with three bullets, fired by Balthasar Gerards, on July 10, 1584. His attack on Spanish troops in 1568, to reclaim the property they took from him, can be seen as the beginning of the Eighty Year's War between the Dutch and the Spanish. William transformed from a contentious figure into the ultimate symbol of freedom, the 'Father of the Nation'. The Rijksmuseum Series is an easy way to learn about the most important artworks and historical topics in the Rijksmuseum. Each lavishly illustrated volume introduces a work of art and places it in its (art) historical context. Ideal for anyone who wants to find out more on his favourite artwork in the museum, as a souvenir or gift. English language edition.
