In 1792, The merchant Gildemeester set up two large rooms in his house on the Herengracht in Amsterdam as a gallery of paintings. The walls are fully wallpapered with paintings in gilded frames. Gildemeester stands in the middle of the front room, talking to one of his guests. Visitors study the famous works, including a Rembrandt – on display above Gildemeester's head.
