Marie Jeanette de Lange was president of the Association for the Improvement of Women's Clothing, which promoted hygienic, comfortable reform clothing in which the woman could move more freely. In February 1900 she posed at home in her reform dress for Jan Toorop. His pointillist style lent itself perfectly to a sparkling portrait of a modern woman on the doorstep of a new century.
