Two contemporaries allowed themselves to be depicted by Rembrandt as Bible figures in period costumes. This sentimental painting shows the tender gestures of the couple: the loving touch that is answered with a gentle caress. The figures and their attitudes correspond with the preliminary sketch, only the peeping king Abimelech is missing. We, the viewers, take on the role as witnesses of their secret love.
