Rembrandt's most famous and largest canvas was made for the Kloveniersdoelen. This was one of the club houses of the Amsterdam militia, the guards of the city. Rembrandt was the first to depict the figures in a group portrait. The captain - in black - gives his lieutenant the order to start marching with his company. The militia prepares itself. Using light, Rembrandt was able to focus on the most important details, such as the hand gesture of the captain and the small girl in the background. She is the militia's mascot.
