Barbara Hepworth at the Rijksmuseum

Barbara Hepworth, one of the most important British sculptors of the twentieth century, was an innovator. She broke with tradition and found new forms of expression in her sculpture. The organic forms of her works heighten the senses with their hollows, basins and voids. Hepworth felt intensely involved in the landscape and nature of Cornwall, where she lived for the second half of her life. ‘All my sculpture comes out of landscape … but no sculpture really lives until it goes back to the landscape, the trees, air & clouds’, she wrote.

This summer, nine of her monumental sculptures come to life in the Rijksmuseum gardens as Hepworth envisioned: trees, plants, hedges and lawns form a natural backdrop for the energetic abstraction of her work.
