Maria Sibylla Merian
Maria Sibylla Merian was a German naturalist and artist renowned for her highly detailed illustrations of insects, flowers and plants. From an early age, she became fascinated by caterpillars and their transformation into butterflies. She not only observed insects themselves, but also the plants on which they depended. In doing so, Merian brought science and art together in a truly distinctive way. Her work reflects the tradition of natural history study in the late seventeenth century, during the Dutch Golden Age.

Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium
In 1699, Maria Sibylla Merian travelled to Suriname to study insects and plants in their natural surroundings. She later published her observations in the celebrated book Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (1705). The hand-coloured illustrations depict caterpillars, butterflies, exotic plants and the various stages of metamorphosis. These botanical illustrations are still regarded as masterpieces of natural history art. One of the best-known plates shows a flowering hibiscus alongside butterflies, a caterpillar and a chrysalis, capturing the full metamorphosis of insects and the beauty of plants in a single composition.
